Review: Personal Foul
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I like this book. I think it started out really strong. Sweet girl, Jessa, abandoned by her parents moves in with boyfriend, Trent, and his family. He holds that over her head and tells her that she owes him everything because of it. When they go off to college he is playing football and starts to get out of control. He is such a jerk that you really don’t even feel bad when she cheats on him with one of his coaches, Cole. Although he is 20 years older than Jessa, he feels a connection to her that he cannot ignore. They have a whole bunch of issues that they have to fight their way through before their story gets some happiness to it. There are some mild instances of sexual assault and harassment. Jessa is a bit on the weak side. She does seem a little too dependent on other people and has a tendency to let men control her life. Given the fact that she never had a dad around to take care of her and protect her it is not surprising. I would like to have seen her get a bit more confidence. The epilogue did a pretty good job of wrapping up a few of the loose ends, but I really would like to have heard a bit about Ines and how things worked out with the professor that she got together with…. Like did he really leave his wife and marry her? Or was Jessa right in having a feeling that something was off in that situation? But I was basically happy with how things ended up for Jessa and Cole and I would recommend this book to friends.
